Should
speak out for themselves.

be able to get real jobs for real pay.
You
should be able to work wherever you want in the community. No matter what your
disability, you have the right to work at any job you are able to do. You also
have the right to choose a job that you enjoy.
Have
the right to develop their own relationships.
You
have the right as adults to build responsible relationships with whoever you
want. You can have friends in the community. You can meet people at work, at
the mall or at different meetings and organizations.
Have
the right to choose their own support and services.
People
First
believes you should have control over
the support and services you receive. You have the right to disagree with your
staff and to have your own opinion. When you start deciding where and who you
will receive your services from, you will gain more control over your life.
Have
the right to live in the community how they choose.
You
have the right to live as independently are you are able. Anything is
possible! If you want to live in your own home, you have the right to do so.
If your are unhappy with the place you are living, you have the right to speak
up about where and how you want to live.
Should
educate the public about the capabilities of people with disabilities.
People
with disabilities should take responsibility for educating the community about
the need for integration. You have to speak up to make sure all of your rights
are being respected. Your neighbors and government officials need to get to
know you as an individual so that they will learn that stereotypes are wrong.
Have
the right to be educated about public and private transportation.
You
have the right to have ACCESS to your community. The public transit
office in your area should work to fit your service needs. If public
transportation is not available in your area, speak to city officials about
getting that changed.
